Developmental Editing

A developmental edit looks at the big picture of the manuscript, providing a detailed critique of the work’s strengths and weaknesses and most importantly, how to improve and “fix” the manuscript. This kind of edit is helpful when the writer is stuck or needs help figuring out why things are just not working as they should be. This is all about the manuscript’s structure, and fixing these issues can be the difference between being published or not and gaining loyal reader followers. The writer will still make all the needed changes, just with a map to follow rather than stumbling around blindly. A developmental edit focuses on:

 All edits will be made on the document in the margins and through comments using Microsoft Word. Both strengths and weaknesses will be noted, along with suggestions as to how to improve the document. Additionally, an editorial letter will be created, providing in-depth suggestions as to recommended changes and additions. The editorial letter will contain a detailed summary of the manuscript and a reverse outline. During the consultation, the author will provide context for the piece being edited—what genre is the manuscript fitting into? Who is the intended audience? What is the long-term goal in terms of publication? If the author is uncertain, these objectives can be addressed through the developmental editing process.

Manuscripts less than 35,000 words/$250.00

Manuscripts between 35,000 and 60,000 words/$500.00

Manuscripts over 60,000 words/$750.00
